The Australian Institute of Family Studies has just published a resource sheet entitled Child abuse and neglect in Indigenous Australian communities. National child protection statistics indicate that reports of child abuse and neglect are, relatively, more likely to relate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children than non-Indigenous Australians.
The report looks at the 'problems in identifying accurate information on the prevalence of child abuse and neglect in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities'. These problems show that some factors in child protection are universal – applying to Australian child protection in general – however some problems reveal issues which are unique to Indigenous children.
The full report is available at Australian Institute of Family Studies website presenting the statistics and issues in greater detail.
