A charter for teaching in Australia, drawn up by professionals from more than 30 national organisations including Early Childhood Australia, was recently launched.
A statement of values and commitments
The charter for the Australian teaching profession covers what teachers aspire to achieve in their role, as well as the responsibilities of the profession.
The introduction to the charter reads:
'Teachers believe in the power of education to make a difference to the lives of individuals and to society.
'As teachers and principals we are committed to giving students the best education possible for them to lead fulfilling, purposeful and productive lives. We bring to the role high levels of professional knowledge, expertise and ethical commitment.'
The charter for the Australian teaching profession is intended to reflect the values and beliefs shared by the teaching community, outline what teachers contribute to society, and promote respect for the role of teachers in the community.
Fran Hinton, Chief Executive of Teaching Australia, stated:
'There's something symbolic about an agreed Charter, a statement that captures the essence of our work, something that shows we are clear about our goals for young people and our hopes for the future of the nation.'
