Over 50 consumer groups are uniting to campaign for a new code of practice in the marketing of junk food to children.
The suggested new code for junk-food advertising
The proposed code includes restrictions on television and internet campaigns, as well as the abolishment of advertising in schools. Also included is banning cartoon characters and celebrities in advertisements, as well as the use of competitions or free gifts.
Appeals for government support
Consumer group Australia's Choice is encouraging the Australian Government to back the anti-junk-food campaign, saying that the government's involvement is crucial.
However, Health Minister Nicola Roxon's spokesman has stated that the government will not consider supporting the new code until later this year, after an Australian Communications and Media Authority report has been presented on the same topic.
