An Australian child was harmed, or found likely to be harmed, every 11 minutes in 2004-5 – nearly double as often as in 1999-2000.
Further, the complexity of the problems and circumstances experienced by children – such as family violence, mental health and social isolation – are worsening. The lifelong and inter-generational consequences make this Australia's most serious social problem.

Early Childhood Australia is proud to announce that it has entered into a partnership with NAPCAN Foundation to promote the upcoming National Child Protection Week 2006.
An invitation from NAPCAN Foundation:
Child abuse and neglect is Australia's most serious social problem – so what can we do to prevent it?
Research shows that strong, healthy communities have less child abuse and neglect. They build a web of support across all aspects of a child's life – enhancing their development, wellbeing and resilience against harm. We call these 'child friendly communities'.
But who knows how to make our communities truly child friendly?
Kids do – if only someone would ask them.
This National Child Protection Week we are doing just that. Our 'Ask Kids' campaign calls on everyday Australians to ask children what they need to grow up well. Their responses will be captured on our website and contribute to our vision of a child friendly Australia.
Help us spread the word on what kids need to be happy and safe. Whether a story on child friendly initiatives, a competition that 'Asks Kids', a mention of our events and resources, a link on your website, or by taking the Child Friendly Challenge below, every effort will help us to stop child abuse and neglect - before it even starts.
More information on National Child Protection Week 2006 is available on the NAPCAN Foundation website.
