The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) has just announced their Book of the Year Awards for 2009. Since their inception in 1946, the Awards remain among the most prestigious in Australian children's literature. They work to affirm the quality of some of Australia's most creative people and provide a boost to their capacity to devote time to their craft.
The CBCA Book of the Year Awards are given every year, across several categories: Older Readers, Younger Readers, Early Childhood, Picture Book of the Year, and the Eve Pownall Award for Information Books. There are also awards given in the Junior Judges Book of the Year category.
Entries are assessed by a panel of judges on the following criteria:
- literary merit, including cohesiveness in significant literary elements
- language chosen carefully for its appropriateness to the theme and style of the work with proper regard to the aesthetic qualities of language
- originality in the treatment of literary elements as they apply to the form of the work
Appeal to the implied readership under the age of eighteen is also taken into account, as well as the quality of illustrations, book design, production, printing and binding.

Junior Judges Book of the Year 2009
The Junior Judges' Project was developed to guide students through literature based activities, starting with the announcement of the CBCA Shortlist for the Book of the Year Awards. Once the shortlist is announced, students are encouraged to read the shortlisted books and, based on the judging criteria, select their Winner and two Honour Books in one or more categories. They can cast their votes online or individually.
The CBCA Junior Judges' Project encourages children to judge the shortlist based on similar criteria to that used by the CBCA Book of the Year judges.
