30 August – 6 September is Literacy and Numeracy Week! Take this opportunity to get more involved with children's literacy and numeracy development. The Australian Scholarships Group (ASG) is calling on parents to help contribute to their children's educational achievements.
The latest research supports the theory that parental involvement in children's learning has a positive effect on educational achievement. The research also shows that children receive more of these positive benefits the earlier in a child's educational process parents get involved, and how involved they are.
ASG recognise that parents can struggle to find the time to get more involved in supporting their children's learning, as their schedules are already full with other family and work responsibilities. In response, ASG have prepared a handy tip sheet to help parents discover the simple, everyday ways in which they can help their children gain an understanding of literacy and numeracy concepts.
Opportunities to practise skills in literacy and numeracy help to enhance a child's knowledge and
comprehension. ASG encourages parents to turn everyday activities into teaching opportunities. A child's everyday routine offers a great many opportunities to:
- learn and practise new words
- count how many
- compare prices
- decide how big
- attempt to problem solve
- recognise what colour
- predict what might happen next
- listen to sounds
- describe a scene
- play creatively
- learn by copying an adult
