Dec 2005 - Airline 'child policy' arouses controversy |
It has recently come to public attention that many major airlines, including Qantas, have a policy of seating unaccompanied young children away from male passengers.
The airlines, as well as NSW Children's Commissioner Gillian Calvert, support the policy on the basis that men are statistically much more likely to be sexual offenders.
However the policy has attracted criticism and claims of discrimination.
In New Zealand, where the policy first came to light, reactions have been strong. Dunedin-based clinical psychologist Nigel Latta has branded the policy ‘utterly offensive', while NZ Greens MP Keith Locke responded by saying:
'It is prejudicial to presume that men can't be trusted to have contact with children unless they are related to them or are specially trained.'
