Your Code of Ethics

The ECA Code of Ethics was a groundbreaking piece of work. It was developed by a national working party of Early Childhood Australia with considerable input from the early childhood field.

At ECA National Council 2003, Early Childhood Australia members voiced their desire to look at the Code of Ethics 10 years on. In response to this, a Code of Ethics Agenda was established to outline this process.

New draft ECA Code of Ethics (PDF)
The Code of Ethics Agenda is now in the final stage of the consultation process. A new draft of the ECA Code of Ethics has been developed, and we encourage you to read it and give your feedback.

For more background information on the ECA Code of Ethics and the Agenda, visit the Early Childhood Australia website.

The complex social lives of children

Peer interactions (Supporting Best Practice)
These 4 links from ECA's Supporting Best Practice web directory focus on how adults can support young children in their early stages of developing friendships and social competencies.

Sensory promising practices
Using examples drawn from everyday experiences, this practical webpage explains the links between what children are doing and what they are learning.

Developing a child care quality rating system: Wisconsin's approach (PDF)
This is a contribution to discussion about a three level QIAS system: non-accredited, accredited, and gold-star accreditation. ECA is not advocating that ‘gold-star' services get additional funding, as is suggested in this article; rather, we are interested in the way input measures – such as teachers, ratios etc. – are required to achieve a higher rating.

The personal qualities of leadership

Part of leadership is about emotional and social competence. The framework below is based on research, and emphasises a reflective process of self-improvement. The concept of self-awareness described in the framework is linked with good leadership qualities.

Emotional competence framework
This is a generic social and emotional competence framework which comes from a management and leadership perspective. Social and emotional learning experiences have greater chances of success when this framework is used.

The emotional intelligence characteristics described later in the article are of particular interest.

Early Childhood Australia books

To young children, everything is new; but some changes are more difficult for them than others. Managing change with infants and young children explores what carers can do to make infants' and young children's early experiences of change as stress-free as possible.

The theories, examples and questions in Learning to lead: Effective leadership skills for teachers of young children will 'prompt' all those who work with young children to reflect on their own skills and take steps to evaluate their own leadership development.

Everyday learning about friendship explores how parents and carers can support and encourage young children as they extend their circle of friends.

All books are quality assured by Early Childhood Australia.
