Learning and teaching resources

A must-visit feature of the Early Childhood Australia website is Supporting Best Practice – there are 100s of links to quality information from around the world.

We have now expanded this great resource to address Learning and Teaching issues.

Every single link has been quality-assured by Early Childhood Australia. We have searched the web to bring you the best articles and fact sheets online.

Learning and teaching links

To celebrate, we have included a sample of what you will find in the new Learning and Teaching section of Supporting Best Practice.

Everyday behaviour support
Positive social interactions ... emotional development ... communication ... challenging behaviours, and more...

Social and emotional learning
Emotional literacy refers to young children’s ability to understand and express their social and emotional needs. These links support practitioners across all early years environments.

About inclusive environments
Talking to children about difference and prejudice ... racial awareness ... and the exploration of diversity issues with children

Routines and transitions
Planning for and supporting transitions between activities ... teaching social skills with careful planning around routines and activities ... and suggestions for rest-time scheduling.

We at Early Childhood Australia hope that you will find Supporting Best Practice to be a valuable ongoing resource.

Coming soon...

The next section of Supporting Best Practice will deal with children’s rights. Here is just one of the great sites we have found on this topic:

Office of the High Commissioner for Children’s Rights: ABC, teaching human rights
Teaching for children’s rights rather than simply about children’s rights. Background and practical strategies for the teaching of human rights.

Policy Briefs, Issue 1 - 'Early childhood and the life course'

Policy Briefs translates research evidence about the early years to inform policy and practice. It is produced by the Centre for Community Child Health, under the direction of Professor Frank Oberklaid.

The first issue of Policy Briefs, 'Early childhood and the life course', summarises the research and implications around ecological and economic perspectives of early childhood.

Early Childhood Australia books

Early childhood resources - all quality assured by Early Childhood Australia.

Understanding children's feelings: Emotional literacy in early childhood explores how children can be supported and encouraged to be aware of their feelings and to understand how they can deal with them. Reesa Sorin suggests using a variety of activities from the arts, to enhance the expression of feelings and to address some of the difficult areas.

The power of guidance: Teaching social-emotional skills in early childhood classrooms uses an engaging, reader friendly style to show teachers how to help children develop lifelong skills such as mutual acceptance and cooperation, creative and peaceful problem-solving strategies, and acceptable ways to express difficult emotions.
