5 tips for safe Internet use
The Australian Consumer Association's magazine, Choice Online, has listed these five simple tips for safer Internet use:
- Keep the computer in a communal place, and ensure the screen is readily visible rather than hidden from view.
- Discuss online stranger danger with children and establish rules about what they can and can't say to people online.
- Take an active interest in what children are doing online and spend time web-surfing together.
- Identify 'safe' sites and take advantage of content filtering software if you'd like to keep a tighter control on surfing practices.
- Teach children to identify and avoid abuse on online forums and to log off chatrooms after use.
