5 tips for safe Internet use

The Australian Consumer Association's magazine, Choice Online, has listed these five simple tips for safer Internet use:

  1. Keep the computer in a communal place, and ensure the screen is readily visible rather than hidden from view.
  2. Discuss online stranger danger with children and establish rules about what they can and can't say to people online.
  3. Take an active interest in what children are doing online and spend time web-surfing together.
  4. Identify 'safe' sites and take advantage of content filtering software if you'd like to keep a tighter control on surfing practices.
  5. Teach children to identify and avoid abuse on online forums and to log off chatrooms after use.
