February 2010 - 'Reaching the marginalized' report released |

Education International (EI), a global union federation of teacher organisations from around the world, is calling for action to ensure that children from poor and developing countries do not risk losing access to educational opportunities as a result of the global financial crisis.
An independent report, Reaching the marginalized, released on 19 January 2010 by Education for All (EFA) says that while rich countries have been able to respond to and recover from the crisis, many people in poor countries have been left even more disadvantaged than they were previously. This situation will have far-reaching consequences into the future:
' … the crisis could create a lost generation of children in the world's poorest countries, whose life chances will have been jeopardized by a failure to protect their right to education … '
Fred van Leeuwen, General Secretary of Education International, predicts that there will be an increase in child labour, as families struggle to earn enough money to survive. Widespread malnutrition is another concern, even for families who can afford to keep their children in school, as it can severely impact on a child's cognitive development and ability to learn.
Education International plans to continue working with UNESCO and the Global Campaign for Education to advocate for increased educational investment. They believe that creating and filling more teaching posts will increase the chances of meeting universal primary education goals for 2015. They also urge governments to target financial and learning support for disadvantaged schools:
'EI urges governments everywhere, but especially those in the G20, to heed the call in this important and comprehensively-researched report. It shows the way forward to a more just world, one in which every child would have the fundamental right to education enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.'
