Every Australia Day, the nation celebrates Australians from a diverse range of fields and disciplines. The Australian honour system is unique, as the community is able to nominate any Australian citizen.
Recipients of Australia Day awards for services to early childhood
This year, 473 people were awarded Australia Day honours for their worthwhile and valuable contributions to the nation. The following individuals were recognised for their dedication to fields relating to child care, early education, advocacy and the rights of children.
Companion of the Order of Australia (AC) recipient
Sir John Leslie Carrick (NSW)
For distinguished service in the area of educational reform in Australia, particularly through the advancement of early childhood education and to the development and support of new initiatives in the tertiary sector, and to the broader community.
As well as being appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1982, Sir John Carrick is:
- Chairman of the Macquarie University Institute of Early Childhood Foundation, since 2001
- a member of the Advisory Board at the Macquarie University Institute of Early Childhood, 1992–2001
- Chairman of the Advisory Committee of Gifted
Education Research, Resource and Information Centre at the University of NSW, 1998–2007.
Member of the Order of Australia (AM) recipients
- Margaret Livingston Howden (VIC) – For service to the community through the Stepfamily Association of Victoria.
- Rosalyn Janice Bird (NSW) – for service to education, particularly for young women, and through support for professional organisations, and as a contributor to the independent schools sector.
- Margaret Dawn Hamilton (NSW) – for service to the arts through the promotion of children's literature and literacy and through support for authors and illustrators.
- Dr William Taylor McKeith (NSW) – for service to education through the development and introduction of innovative programs for staff and students, particularly through programs for the intellectually challenged and the gifted.
- Carol Odell (NSW) – for service to children's literature as an author, scriptwriter and presenter.
- Richard Allan Whittington (WA) – for service to the Indigenous community of Wiluna, particularly through the management of health care services and programs to improve education and infrastructure.
Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) recipients
- Elizabeth Mary Daly (TAS) – For service to education in Tasmania, particularly in the areas of early childhood education, language development and policy implementation, and to the community.
- Dr Andrew Lewis Blair (QLD) – for service to medicine, particularly in the fields of paediatrics and child protection.
- Dixie Hickman Cole (NSW) – for service to special education, particularly through the Miranda Public School, and to the community.
- Douglas John Curtis (SA) – for service to education, particularly through the development of a range of programs and initiatives at Lucindale Area School and Roxby Downs Area School, and to the community.
- Susan Feller (NSW) – for service to children with intellectual disabilities, particularly through The Joseph Varga School.
- Raffaela Galati-Brown (VIC) – for service to education and to Indigenous youth as the Principal of Northland Secondary College.
