Prime Minster John Howard announced his new Ministerial Cabinet on 24 January 2006.
Among the changes, there are two important new faces relevant to the early childhood field.
The new ministers
Mal Brough is now Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs
- formerly Assistant Treasurer
- replacing Kay Patterson, who has announced her retirement from politics
- taking on Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone's Indigeneous Affairs portfolio
Julie Bishop is now Minister for Education, Science and Training
- formerly Minister for Ageing
- replacing Brendan Nelson, who has taken Robert Hill's position of Minister of Defence
