Late last year the Federal Government began the process of developing a National Action Plan for Education for Sustainable Development (NAP ESD). The objective is a more sustainable Australia through community education and learning.

Creating a new plan

NAP ESD will replace the National Action Plan for Environmental Education which was introduced in July 2000. Read the original National Action Plan for Environmental Education.

The new plan is based on the Caring for Our Future strategy, which will be used to build on current activities and broaden the NAP's focus to explicitly acknowledge the interconnection of social, economic and environmental development.

Read the Caring for Our Future—The Australian Government Strategy for the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, 2005–2014 framework.

Changing the focus

The creation of the NAP will involve:
  • an analysis of the current status and needs of the sectors involved in education for sustainable development (or education for sustainability and environmental education)
  • identification of stakeholders that have not previously been engaged
  • focusing on the areas of greatest national need and impact.

Phases of development

Phase 1: Scoping (December 2006–January 2007)
  • Consultation with steering committee, National Environmental Education Council (NEEC) and National Environmental Education Network (NEEN).
  • Interviews with key informants.
  • Draft literature review.
  • Establishment of project website.
  • Conducting of public survey.
Phase 2: Consultation (March–May 2007)
  • Disseminate discussion paper.
  • Conduct state and territory workshops.
  • Present feedback from discussion papers and workshops to steering committee.
Phase 3: Drafting (May–June 2007)
  • Submission of draft action plan.
  • Review by steering committee, NEEC and NEEN.

Getting involved

It is strongly recommended that individuals and organisations participate by visiting the project website, taking the online survey and providing input at the workshops through your group or representative.

The NAP survey closes on 16 February 2007. Complete the National Action Plan online survey.
