Teachers make an important contribution to the lives of our young people and help shape the future of our country, yet few opportunities arise to recognise the true value of the role they play within the community.

The NEiTA teaching awards

Launched in Australia in 1994 by the Australian Scholarships Group, the National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA) program aims to recognise and honour excellent teachers from local communities and to encourage students to enter the teaching profession.

NEiTA categories

This year, two awards streams are being offered to teachers from early childhood and special centres, and primary and secondary schools in government, denominational, independent and private education environments:

  • NEiTA Teaching Excellence Awards are presented to the teachers whose exemplary classroom skills and dedication have demonstrated innovative approaches to teaching that serve as models for schools and early childhood centres.
  • Australian Scholarships Group Community Merit Awards are made to teachers who have engaged their students in activities that are of service to the community, and/or who have provided the local community with opportunities to support and participate in the work of the school or the early childhood centre.

Nominations now open

You can nominate a teacher online or download a nomination form at the NEiTA website.

The closing date for nominations is 28 July 2006.

Five great reasons to nominate

  1. Teachers do amazing work every day in our schools and centres. This is a great opportunity to thank them and tell Australia.
  2. Recognising a teacher for an award is a celebration for the whole school community.
  3. A great teacher is an inspiration to generations of current and future teachers.
  4. Nominations keep the focus on high standards of education in our schools.
  5. Grants and prizes promote professional development.
