July 2006 - Results of national survey into long day care |

Last year, The Australia Institute surveyed the perceptions of long day care workers. These results, published as Child Care Quality in Australia, suggested that workers viewed the quality of care as being lower in chain centres than in private, independent and community-based centres.
The Australian Institute have hypothesised that such a trend may be due to centralised management decisions about cost, rather than the work of staff.
Further research
In order to explore this hypothesis, The Australian Institute ran a second study, using detailed telephone interviews of 20 current or former childcare staff at ABC Learning. The results – which include direct quotations for interviewees – were published as ABC Learning Centres: A case study of Australia's largest child care corporation'.
The latest report is available from The Australia Institute website: ABC Learning Centres: A case study of Australia's largest child care corporation (PDF).
Both reports are also available in printed and bound form for $21 (each, including postage and handling) from The Australia Institute.
