Jun 2004 Play School: How should television for an audience of young children look? |

The debate that has emerged over the recent television broadcast of a child being accompanied to an amusement park by her ‘two mums’ has seen Health Minister Tony Abbott label the depiction ‘shocking’, Communications Minister Daryl Williams implying that the issue is not appropriate for an audience of young children and Children’s Minister Larry Anthony accuse the ABC of failing in its responsibility to parents.
Without hyperbole, Play School has become a cultural institution. Its 38year history has led to an exhibition at the National Museum of Australia; it is known and respected nationwide. Many, many Australians will have grown up watching it (twice a day) and, understandably, have very strong opinions regarding the television show.
