The Australian Institute of Family studies has released a report entitled, In the drivers seat: understanding young adults' driving behaviour. Research takes a unique angle, examining drivers from infancy to adulthood in order to study a possible connection between the personal and social circumstances of young drivers and the influence of these on subsequent driving behaviour.
The report indicates that while current deterrent initiatives are targeting the correct problem areas, further investigation is needed to establish why some young drivers are failing to connect with these approaches. Research found that one-third of young drivers reported that they had been detected speeding by police at least once and more than forty percent had been involved in a car or motorcycle accident.
