March 2007 - Queensland child-friendly community program receives million-dollar grant PDF Print E-mail

The National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN) has received a $1,000,000 grant from the Queensland State Government. The money will be used to implement several initiatives designed to create child-friendly communities over the next three years.

NAPCAN’s Play A Part program

NAPCAN has announced that the grant money will be used to finance its Play A Part program. This initiative assists communities in establishing child-friendly environments which reduce the abuse and neglect of children under eight years.

Play A Part uses a ‘whole-of-community’ approach in preventing child abuse, particularly through its community education seminars. These sessions provide tools that communities can use to implement preventative strategies.

Community involvement

Play A Part works to improve the welfare of children by encouraging individuals, businesses and government departments to support:

  • early childhood communities
  • community organisations
  • schools
  • family-friendly businesses
  • sporting groups and clubs.

New focus areas

NAPCAN will use its funding to expand the Play A Part program in five Queensland communities:

  • Inala to Goodna
  • Chermside
  • Toowomba
  • Springfield Lakes
  • the Gold Coast.
