Early Childhood Australia and the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers have developed a draft policy on early childhood mathematics.
Recent evidence has strengthened the resolve of early childhood educators to advocate for the recognition of the importance of the early childhood years in the development of people's learning and lives. This importance has been recognised particularly in terms of the development of language and literacy but not so strongly in the development of mathematics and numeracy. This position statement seeks to redress this situation by considering appropriate actions to ensure that all children have access to powerful mathematics ideas and learning in the early years.
The full version of the draft policy on early childhood mathematics is available online.
