The 2007 National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA) were presented in Melbourne on 21 September.

National Excellence in Teaching Awards

The National Excellence in Teaching Awards were established in 1994 by the Australian Scholarship Group, in order to increase recognition of the important roles of early childhood, primary and secondary teachers.

In congratulating the winner, NEiTA Foundation Chairman, Mr Terry O'Connell said:

'Teachers are second only to parents in terms of the people who have the biggest influence on children's futures, and it is important that teachers receive the recognition they deserve.'

Early childhood educator winners

Winners in the early childhood section were:

  • Jenni McDonald – Caravonica State School (Queensland)
  • Denise Rundle – Boroondara Kindergarten (Victoria)

A profile of award-winner Denise Rundle appeared in the latest issue of Every Child magazine, published by Early Childhood Australia.

Primary school educators section

Winners in the primary school section were:

  • Daniel Broadfoot – Annandale State School (Townsville, Queensland)
  • Anna Di Nuzzo – South Street Primary School (Moe, Victoria)
  • Penny James – Elizabeth Special School (South Australia)
  • Daniel Spillane – Deepwater Public School (New South Wales)
  • Michael Staples – Halls Head Primary School (Western Australia)
  • Jason Wegener – Charles Conder Primary School (ACT)

ASG Community Merit Grant

Winners of the Australian Scholarships Group Community Merit Grant were:

  • Ayman Alwan, Team Leader, Al Amanah College Team (Liverpool, New South Wales)
  • Beppie de Kuyer – Our Lady of Mercy Primary School (Girrawheen, Western Australia)
  • Nel Smit – Woodbridge School (Tasmania)

Award winner Nel Smit has worked with Early Childhood Australia as a reviewer of a title in the Research in Practice Series and as the author of articles, all published in Every Child magazine.
