As part of the annual Common colds need common sense campaign, National Prescribing Service Ltd (NPS), a nonprofit organisation, is calling on parents not to expect an antibiotic from their GP to treat children with symptoms of a common cold. The Common colds need common sense campaign is aimed at reducing unnecessary use of antibiotics a cause of the growing problem of bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
The common myth is that antibiotics can treat a cold, said Dr Richard Abbott, a GP and NPS Board Director. Antibiotics have been developed to treat bacterial infections not viral infections such as a common cold. Only a small percentage of common cold infections are complicated by bacterial infections that might require antibiotic treatment. For further information visit www.nps.org.au
