The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA) confers annual awards for 'the best' books published in Australia for children and young people. A winner and two honour books are selected in each of the five categories.
Children's Book Council of Australia 2008 Award Winners: Early Childhood category
CBCA separates the Picture Book of the Year category, which often features sophisticated publications for older students, from the Book of the Year: Early Childhood category, which focuses on titles suitable for younger children.
Jenni Connor, a member of ECA's Publications Committee, reviewed each of the recognised books in the Book of the Year: Early Childhood category.
Book of the Year 2008: Early Childhood
Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley
Aaron Blabey
Viking/Penguin Group
This warm-hearted, entertaining book is about the power of friendship and the enjoyment of difference. Pearl Barley is loud where Charlie is quiet, adventurous where he is timid, talkative where he is shy – but that's exactly why they are really great friends.
Suitable for children aged 4-8 years
Honour Books 2008
Cat
Mike Dumbleton
Illus. Craig Smith
Working Title Press
This deceptively simple text supports early literacy learning with its very few words and repeated refrain: 'Thank goodness for that.' Craig Smith's busy, detailed illustrations draw young readers back time and time again with lasting enjoyment.
Suitable for children aged 3-5 years
Lucy Goosey
Margaret Wild
Illus. Ann James
Little Hare Books
This gentle story of growing up and leaving familiar surroundings uses lyrical language that begs to be read aloud. Ann James' soft illustrations perfectly capture Lucy's fears and her mother's reassurance.
Suitable for children aged 3-8 years
