Early Childhood Australia commends PM's decision to apologise
Early Childhood Australia (ECA), a leading non-government advocacy organisation for young children, has commended Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's decision to apologise to Indigenous Australians in reference to the Stolen Generations.
ECA's National President Margaret Young expressed support for the apology, adding that it is 'in keeping with Early Childhood Australia's continuing work to represent the rights of all children, and our particular recognition of the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.'
'ECA applauds the Government's apology to the Stolen Generations. It is a mark of respect and acknowledgement that we strongly echo.'
'The apology is an important recognition of the impact of past actions on those children and families whose lives were so deeply affected, and the lasting repercussions that are still present today – not only for those directly involved, but for Australia as a nation.'
'We look forward to going forward with all who see this as a meaningful step towards personal, community and national reconciliation.'
Ms Young also expressed support for the Prime Minister's commitment to close the gap in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
'All Australian children have a right to equal standards of health care and education, and our society has a particular obligation to ensure that these are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in ways that are accessible and meaningful to them and their families.'
