Early Childhood Australia responds to the draft Early Years Learning Framework
The Early Years Learning Framework is currently being trialled and will come into effect from July 2009.
The Early Years' Learning Framework is one of a suite of initiatives being undertaken by the Australian Government to support families and to give children the best possible start in their lives as people, as learners and as future citizens. Early Childhood Australia applauds these child- and family-oriented initiatives and is especially pleased that early childhood education and care practice will be guided by a leading edge, contemporary learning framework.
In terms of the context of the EYLF, there are many important social, political and environmental factors that must be acknowledged:
'There is still much to be done to meet our obligation to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and to respect their right to live their own heritage and to benefit fully from what this country now offers. As well, across Australia, among all groups, too many individuals and families struggle with obesity, mental illness and substance abuse.
There remains an unacceptable chasm between wealth and poverty in this resource-rich country, with many families struggling to raise their children and many children struggling to benefit from educational opportunities. Globally, the survival of the planet is threatened as a result of human actions.'
