This book is an indispensable resource developed through action research and is suitable for all early childhood services as well as in the early years of primary school. It is also a valuable textbook for university and TAFE early childhood courses.

There's more to food than eating is an important resource for early childhood staff, and includes issues and information about food and nutrition. The major focus of the book, however, is practical food learning experiences for children from infancy to age eight.

These activities include:

  • involving children in decision-making about food;
  • science and maths topics for inquiring young minds;
  • gardening, processing and recycling within the food cycle;
  • motor skills practice including rolling, mixing, pouring, tearing;
  • using popular children's literature as a starting point for food learning; and
  • group and individual picture recipes, including recipes from different cultures, that children can learn to use independently.

There's more to food than eating is written by staff at the Centre for Public Health Research and the School of Early Childhood, Queensland University of Technology and funded by Families, Youth and Community Care - Queensland.

This book presents a great manual concerning food, nutrition, and education and is an excellent educational tool for early childhood professionals in settings where food is supplied or provided by parents. I found this book covered all aspects of nutrition and included interesting curriculum planning ideas, helpful tips and great recipes along with an easy reading layout and basic uncluttered illustrations. A good book to share with a family with a 'fussy' eater.
