Your child's first year at school: A book for parents

A successful first year of school is the foundation for:
  • a strong school–parent relationship
  • children's successful learning
  • a positive school experience.

Early Childhood Australia and the Australian Primary Principals Association understand that the first year at school is a big step for a young child. This is why they have produced Your child's first year at school: A book for parents.

Your child's first year at school: A book for parents covers what parents want to know as their child starts school, including:

  • What their children are learning at school and how parents can support them
  • Things that might worry their child – making friends, bullying and after-school care
  • Practical issues like lunchtime in a big playground and going to the toilet
  • Building a strong relationship with the school.

The book is only available in bulk through primary schools. Parents should contact their school principal about purchasing the book from Early Childhood Australia.

In 700 schools, 23,000 parents of children starting school in 2008 were given copies of this book. Principals, teachers and parents were overwhelmingly positive about the value of the book.

'This book was a tremendous help to me personally. I could not think of a better way for a parent to prepare for primary school.'
—Camille, parent, St Mary's School, Vic

'My child was wetting herself at school. She had not done this for years. After reading and following the advice in the book, the problem disappeared.'
—Anxious Parent, WA

'I was so worried about my child starting school. The book took most of my anxieties away. It explained everyday life in a primary school so clearly.'
—Kylie, parent, Currambine Primary School, WA

'The emphasis on social skills development as well as academic achievement make this book a must have for every family with a child starting school'
—Julia Elsey, Head of Junior School, Roseville College, NSW

'The orientation process was helpful but at the time it was almost "information overload". A book like Your child's first year at school is great!'
—Christine, parent, Fulham Gardens Primary School, SA
