Federal Election Forum on Early Childhood

Early Childhood Australia is pleased to be hosting the 2025 Early Childhood Australia Federal Election Forum on Early Childhood with:
- The Hon Dr Anne Aly MP, Minister for Early Childhood Education, Australian Labor Party
- Angie Bell MP, Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education, Liberal National Party of Queensland
- Zoe Daniel MP, Independent
- Senator Steph Hodgins-May, Australian Greens
Each of the invited candidates will have the opportunity to provide a brief overview of their policy positions with early childhood education and care and engage in conversation facilitated by ECA CEO, Sam Page. Upon registration, attendees are encouraged to submit questions which may be used to shape questions for candidates. A brief Q&A session will conclude the forum.

Hon Dr Anne Aly MP Dr Anne Aly MP has been the Federal Member for Cowan since 2016 and is also the Federal Minister for Early Childhood Education, Minister for Youth and the Minister Assisting the Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme in the Albanese Government.By her late twenties, Anne was a single mother of two young boys earning the minimum wage to put food on the table. She went on to study her Masters and PhD and worked as a professor, academic and practitioner in counter terrorism and countering violent extremism. The founder of People against Violent Extremism, Anne was the only Australian representative to speak at President Obama’s 2015 White House summit on countering violent extremism. Anne is a 2011 inductee into the Western Australian Women’s Hall of Fame, a 2016 nominee for Australian of the Year and a 2016 recipient of the prestigious Australian Security Medal. In 2021, she was awarded the McKinnon Prize for Emerging Political Leader of the Year, in recognition of her Parliamentary work against both right-wing extremism and family and violence. |

Ms Angie Bell MP Angie Bell began her career in retail sales before studying at Griffith University’s Gold Coast Business School as a mature-aged student. She went on to work across every Australian state and territory as a workplace trainer, assessor and retail consultant for major brands. A specialist in small business development, Angie authored a marketing book still used at Griffith University and Copenhagen Business School.Angie played a leading role in the Gold Coast’s COVID-19 response, forming the City Heart Taskforce and championing economic recovery efforts. She chaired the Reimagine Gold Coast forums in 2020 and 2021, advocating for economic diversification and delivering support programs for families and businesses through the Morrison Government. A former president of Liberal National Party (LNP) Women in Queensland, she is a strong advocate for women in politics and upholds LNP values of opportunity, family, and freedom. Angie has a background in music, having studied at the Elder Conservatorium and performed internationally. Elected to federal parliament in 2019, she now serves as Shadow Minister for Early Childhood Education and Youth and is the founder and Patron of the Gold Coast IMPACT Youth Summit. Angie is a passionate advocate for the Gold Coast, the arts and Australia’s young people. |

Ms Zoe Daniel MP Zoe Daniel is the community-backed independent member for Goldstein elected at the federal election on 21 May 2022.She is a mum, wife, former broadcast journalist and foreign correspondent. Zoe lives in Hampton in Bayside Melbourne with her husband Rowan, their two teenagers Arkie and Pearl, and their golden retriever, Tully. In nearly 30 years of reporting, Zoe has covered natural disasters, conflict, economics and politics, and all manner of news around the world. She has seen first-hand the impact of climate change in the Arctic, and has covered floods, typhoons and bushfires across four continents, including Australia. Zoe has been a rural and regional journalist, a business and finance reporter, and a foreign affairs specialist, interviewing and interacting with prime ministers, treasurers and some of Australia’s top CEOs and small businesspeople. Before entering parliament, Zoe waited (like many) for governments to develop costed and structured strategies to safeguard communities and economies, to innovate and to embrace the immense business and job opportunities that a renewable climate economy presents. |

Senator Steph Hodgins-May Steph Hodgins-May is the Greens Senator for Victoria.Steph is a dedicated climate, environment and social justice campaigner, with a background in environmental law, advocacy and healthy food systems. Steph took her seat as a Senator for Victoria in May 2024, and holds the Early Childhood Education and Care portfolio, and the Science, Industry and Innovation portfolio. She has worked as an adviser to the United Nations in New York, successfully strengthening Australia’s position on the impact of the climate crisis on food security, negotiating stronger reef protections and increasing Australia’s humanitarian intake of refugees and asylum seekers. Steph’s fight for climate justice has taken her across the globe. She has worked as the Head of Pacific for a major international non-profit, achieving landmark legal victories in deep allyship with Indigenous frontline Pasifika communities. Born to a fifth-generation farmer and rural public school teacher, Steph has a close connection to her regional roots in Central Victoria. She founded a local organic food business informed by her upbringing on the family farm. Steph lives with her partner and two young children in the Melbourne suburb of St Kilda. |
