Leaving vulnerable children behind

Early Childhood Australia (ECA) is disappointed that the Senate passed the Jobs for Families Child Care Package without amendments. It is estimated that more than 30 000 children could lose access to early learning because their parents would fail the Activity Test which is now part of the new Child Care Package requirements. Read ECA’s full media statement here.

Making improvements to child protection

A new Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) report, Child protection Australia 2015–16, has shown that the number of children in the out-of-home care system in Australia has increased. At a meeting with State and Territory Community Services Ministers in November, it was agreed that the Commonwealth, state and territory governments would develop a set of guiding principles to drive improvement in this area. This is a step in the right direction, but 'we need to do everything we can as soon as we can', said Senator Zed Seselja, Assistant Minister for Social Services and Multicultural Affairs.
