Dreaming stories: A springboard for learning records the experiences of several diverse services using the The Dreaming films to introduce young children to a huge range of concepts:

  • explaining the seasons, life cycles, the importance of rain and responsibility for the environment
  • appreciating diversity in appearance, language and culture
  • exploring emotional concepts such as jealousy, fairness and the value of sharing encouraging communication, cooperation and teamwork
  • investigating these ideas through music, movement, art and computer design.

The Dreaming stories are an important part of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ cultural heritage. As the world’s longest continuous record of historic events and spirituality, they provide valuable wisdom for all people.

Jenni Connor

Jenni Connor undertakes research and writing into learning, curriculum and educational issues generally. Jenni has a number of publications with ECA, including Your Child’s First Year at School. Jenni has been an early childhood teacher, primary principal, curriculum manager and writer. She is now a freelance writer and undertakes research, writing, editing and lecturing in early childhood education, literacy, learning and curriculum.

Geraldine Atkinson

Geraldine Atkinson is a Bangerang/Wiradjuri woman who has devoted her career to expanding the possibilities available to Koorie people through education. For over 30 years Geraldine has been a significant presence in the Koorie and wider Victorian community. She is currently President of the Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Incorporated (VAEAI) and Deputy Chair of the Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care (SNAICC). Geraldine has an important role to play in contributing her direct experience of what works in community, combined with her extensive policy knowledge. Geraldine regards this ability to act as a link between policy and community as her principal function. As a community leader, Geraldine has worked hard to ensure that real progress is made for Koorie people. Geraldine has made a significant impact in the area of early childhood and has always regarded education as being the best instrument of progress.
